Changelog
Every released version. The app checks for updates on its own and installs them from here, so what is on this page is what you can actually be running.
0.2.6
8 October 2026 Current- App lock. MiniEnv locks when it opens and after five minutes without use, and unlocks with Touch ID or your Mac password. Turn it off in Settings, Account, App lock. It protects the app window; the command-line tool still works while you are logged in to your Mac.
- One Pro subscription now covers up to three teams you run. Each team in the sidebar shows its own colour and plan, and the top bar says Pro only if you run a Pro team.
- Cancelling Pro names every team that moves to Free, and when.
- When a teammate sets up a new Mac, you can re-share a project with their new key, from the project menu or with
minienv members reshare. - The command-line tool prints a single value with
minienv get NAME, without writing a file. - Import .env only lets you pick files named like
.env,.env.localorproduction.env. - The window opens taller and remembers its size and position. The Vault tab shows on a project with no values yet.
- Accessibility and reliability fixes throughout: every field labelled, tabs that work with the arrow keys, a visible focus ring, and required fields checked before a dialog submits.
0.2.5
24 September 2026 Current- Values are decrypted when you ask to see, copy or compare them, not all at once when a project opens, and they are cleared from memory when you hide them, switch project or hide the window.
- .env files with quotes, backslashes or several lines in a value (a PEM key, say) now import and export exactly. Before, such values could come out changed.
- The app only opens links to Stripe, minienv.dev and Vercel in your browser.
- Dropping files on the window always asks first, and never imports a file that is not a .env.
- MiniEnv refuses to encrypt to a key the server lists for you that is not the key on your Mac.
- The command-line tool: named tabs (
minienv tabs,move,rename),--env=name, binary files in the vault, and a locked Keychain is no longer mistaken for a missing key. - Limits that protect everyone: at most 1,000 values per project, and a cap on how many emails any one address can be sent.
0.2.4
24 September 2026 Current- The command-line tool comes with the app. Settings, Account, Install command line tool puts
minienvon your PATH, and it updates whenever the app does. It needs Node.js 20.19 or later. - If you already have a MiniEnv account, being invited to a team no longer adds you straight away. The invitation appears in Settings, Team, and you accept or decline it.
- Each project is now stored as a single copy that only one change can write at a time, so a save can no longer undo a removal made a moment before.
- The privacy policy changed: this website now counts visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which sets no cookies, instead of Google Analytics. The app asks you to accept the updated policy once.
0.2.3
24 September 2026 Current- Setting up with an invitation: paste the link from the invitation email and you join that team, with your address already confirmed. Before this, the app could not accept an invitation at all.
- Sign in on another Mac with a link sent to your email. The new Mac gets its own key and reads nothing until a teammate shares each project with it again.
0.2.2
23 September 2026 Current- Remove someone from a team, or leave one. Every project they were in is re-encrypted without them before it finishes.
- Before encrypting anything, MiniEnv checks each teammate's key against the one it accepted last time. If a key has changed, it stops and shows you the fingerprint to check with them.
- Fingerprints are shown next to each person on a project and when you add someone.
- A value saved from an out-of-date view of a project is refused, rather than encrypted for someone who was just removed.
- Deleting your account while you are in someone else's shared project now works. Before this it was always refused.
- The settings file holding your sign-in is readable only by you.
- The app can be used from the keyboard, and screen readers hear its messages.
0.2.1
23 September 2026 Current- New project asks which team it belongs to when you are in more than one. Before this, anyone invited into a second team could not create a project at all.
- The sidebar groups projects under their team.
- Changing plan always goes through Stripe. The old shortcut that changed a plan without payment is gone.
0.2.0
25 August 2026 Current- Faster project switching.
- A project menu that is not three enormous dots.
- In-app updates: the app checks for a new version, verifies its signature, and installs it without sending you back to the website.
How updates work
Every release is signed with a key we hold offline, and the matching public key is compiled into the app itself. Before installing anything, your copy checks the signature against that embedded key and refuses any release that does not match, including one served from our own domain.
That signature is verified once more before a release is ever published, against the same embedded key rather than the key file on disk, because that is the one your installed app will actually enforce. A release whose signature does not verify is not published.
This signature is ours, not Apple's. MiniEnv is not yet notarised with an Apple Developer ID, so macOS shows a warning the first time you open it. Updates installed from inside the app do not ask again.
Getting a specific version
The current release manifest lives at
/updates/latest.json, and every update the app
has installed stays available at a stable URL under /download/.
Downloads from this site are paused while we test the installer. Apple Silicon, macOS 12 or later.
